Explore South Congress Avenue in Austin

Austin is a city that rewards curiosity, and the area around the University of Texas at Austin is one of the best places to experience it. Whether you are visiting for a campus tour, a weekend getaway, or a longer stay, the neighborhoods surrounding UT are packed with world-class food, live music, outdoor activities, and iconic Austin landmarks — all within walking distance or a short ride of each other. Here is your guide to the best things to do near UT Austin.
Even if you are not a student, the UT Austin campus is worth exploring. Start at the Tower, the university's most iconic building, which stands 307 feet tall and glows burnt orange at night. The Blanton Museum of Art on the east side of campus houses over 21,000 works, including a stunning installation by Ellsworth Kelly called Austin — a stone building with luminous colored glass windows that is free to visit. The LBJ Presidential Library, also on campus, offers a deep dive into American political history with exhibits on the Great Society, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights era. If you are visiting in spring, the campus is covered in bluebonnets and the live oak trees are draped in Spanish moss — it is genuinely beautiful.
A 10-minute walk south of campus brings you to the Texas State Capitol, the largest state capitol building in the United States (yes, bigger than the US Capitol in Washington, DC — by nearly 15,000 square feet). Free guided tours run daily and take you through the rotunda, legislative chambers, and underground extension. The grounds are a lovely place to walk, with monuments, shade trees, and a view straight down Congress Avenue all the way to the river. Admission is free, and no reservation is required.
Lady Bird Lake is the heart of Austin's outdoor scene. The 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail circles the lake and is one of the most popular urban trails in the country. You can walk, run, or rent a bike from a dozen rental stations along the path. For something more adventurous, rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from Texas Rowing Center or Rowing Dock — both are right on the water and cost about $20 per hour. The lake is calm, motor-free, and offers skyline views of downtown that look especially good at sunset.
Barton Springs Pool is a three-acre outdoor pool fed entirely by natural springs from the Edwards Aquifer. The water stays a consistent 68 to 70 degrees year-round, which feels incredible in the Texas heat. Located in Zilker Park, just a short ride south of campus, Barton Springs has been an Austin institution since the 1920s. It costs just a few dollars to get in (free before 8 AM), and the surrounding park is perfect for a post-swim picnic under the pecan trees. If you are visiting in summer, this is the single best place to cool off in the city.
West Campus, where Avon22 is located, is one of Austin's best food neighborhoods. Here are the spots locals love:
Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, and you do not need to go far from campus to see why. The Red River District, just east of downtown, is packed with legendary venues. Stubb's Bar-B-Q hosts big-name acts on its outdoor amphitheater stage. Mohawk has an indoor stage and a rooftop overlooking downtown. Cheer Up Charlies and Elysium are smaller, more intimate spots with eclectic lineups most nights of the week.
If you prefer something more low-key, East 6th Street has become the go-to strip for daytime patio drinking, intimate venues, and a laid-back bar scene. The White Horse is an East 6th staple — a honky-tonk with live country music every night and free two-step lessons on weeknights.
From March to early November, Austin's most famous residents emerge at dusk: the 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats that live under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Every evening around sunset, they stream out in massive clouds for their nightly insect hunt. It is one of the largest urban bat colonies in the world, and watching them from the bridge, the South Austin viewing area, or a kayak on the lake below is an unforgettable experience. It is free, it is weird, and it is pure Austin.
South Congress Avenue, or SoCo, is Austin's most iconic shopping and dining street. Walk south from the river and you will find Home Slice Pizza (New York-style slices and whole pies that rival anything in Brooklyn), Allen's Boots (a massive Western wear store where you can get fitted for cowboy boots), Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds (a beloved costume shop that has been open since 1984), and dozens of boutique shops, coffee houses, and food trailers. On the first Thursday of each month, SoCo hosts a street festival with extended hours, live music, and food stalls.
